Recent Advances in Skin Barrier Research: Focus on Atopic Dermatitis
Jung Han-Jin

Abstract
Several studies were published emphasizing the role of the epithelial barrier in patients with allergic diseases including atopic dermatitis. Skin barrier dysfunction plays a key role in the initiation of atopic dermatitis and is associated with both genetic susceptibility and environmental risk factors. An impaired skin barrier as a cause for sensitization to food allergens in children and its relationship to filaggrin mutations has been an important development. In addition, several studies presented new approaches for improvement of epithelial barrier function and novel biologicals used in the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases. This review highlights key advances in mechanisms of epithelial barrier dysfunction in patients with atopic dermatitis, particularly those reported in 2015-16.
